About the Manistee River One of the most diverse rivers in Michigan‚ the Manistee River has it all... small-stream fishing for wild brookies and browns in its brush-lined headwaters‚ drift boat fishing for monster browns and feisty rainbows in the Hodenpyle Dam and Tippy Dam backwaters‚ and incredible salmon and steelhead fishing in the Big Manistee below Tippy Dam.andnbsp; This spring-fed trout stream originates east of Mancelona and flows south for about 20 miles at which point it takes a hard leftandnbsp; traveling west about 80 miles until it dumps into Lake Michigan in the city of Manistee‚ MI.
A variety of insects inhabit the Manistee including caddis flies‚ stoneflies and mayflies In fact‚ the Manistee is know for its incredible hexagenia hatch that usually occurs from mid June to mid July. During the spring and summer months‚ trout can be caught using streamers‚ nymphs and a variety of caddis and dry fly patterns. Salmon and steelhead can be caught during the Spring Steelhead Run using egg patterns‚ wooly buggers‚ nymphs‚ spey flies‚ etc.
Access to the river is good in some areas and spotty in others.andnbsp; The fly-only section travels through private land and can be accessed via bridges and a few public access sites.andnbsp; Much of the upper stretches of the river travels through the Upper Manistee State Forest Campground and can be accessed via its many campsites.
